An Exploration Of Hand Dyed Yarn

Three different dyers all using the same unique yarn

We partnered with amazing hand dyers from all of the USA to celebrate the colors of summer. Each artist took a different approach to dyeing the yarn, resulting in three drastically different colorways.

Listen in as our founder chats with Melissa Renfrey of Storyteller Stitchery about her approach to dyeing for this project.

A Yarn Unlike Any Other

The perfect combination of wool & cotton

Launched in 2016, Zephyr DK was a limited run yarn line. It was initially designed as an ideal yarn for sweater knitting.

This DK weight yarn is a blend of 55% wool and 45% cotton, with 3 lightly twisted plys. Being woolen spun, the yarn has a bouncy, rustic feel that softens as you knit with it.

100% sourced and manufactured in the USA.

"I wanted to capture those stories of summer with this project. This lavender color is inspired by a dreamy day hanging out at the lake."

Frequently Asked Questions

This yarn is scheduled to ship the last week of September 2024

Zephyr DK is a 55% wool / 45% cotton, 3-ply, woolen spun yarn originally designed as an ideal yarn for sweaters. It takes advantage of the springy elasticity of wool, and the cool moisture management of cotton.

It is 100% sourced and manufactured in the USA, with wool coming from Texas and cotton coming from California. The yarn was milled in Wisconsin. All of the hand dyers for this project are US based as well.

This yarn has a rustic feel, and while not “soft” it is not scratchy either. It does soften up as you knit. Washing or blocking this yarn once knit up is recommended, as it will help the yarn relax and soften quite a bit.

While this yarn is technically a DK weight, it is quite forgiving with it’s gauge, and can be knit up as a light worsted as well.

Each individual skein in this kit is 100g and around 260yds.

NOTE: Woolen spun yarns are not traditionally combed or scoured, so they often contain some vegetative matter.

Zephyr DK is a woolen spun yarn, so it has a rustic feel, but it should not be scratchy. It has a pleasant feel in the hand and will soften as you knit it up.

Woolen spun yarns are quite bouncy and springy, and this yarn should soften with use, but it is not a “luxury” yarn.

In addition, the cotton content can give the yarn some stiffness, which will relax when washed.

We recommend this yarn for lightweight accessories.

NOTE: The woolen spun process does not comb the yarn fibers, so there may be some vegetative matter to pick out.

Since we don’t have solid colors of Zephyr, here are some yarns that have similar fiber content or characteristics which should pair nicely.

There are many patterns that will look amazing with hand dyed yarns like this.
